Toyota was the first company to initiate the journey towards just-in-time delivery (JIT). It began in 1953 when Eiji Toyoda - the former Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation - visited Ford's Rouge plant in Detroit and observed their production line practices. He noticed that Ford had huge inventories of parts and machines sitting around waiting for assembly. This sparked an idea for Toyota – to eliminate waste by producing only what is needed and when needed.

Toyota started experimenting with JIT by reducing batch sizes and increasing communication between suppliers and production lines. With every passing year, they perfected the practice of just-in-time delivery and passed it on to the world as globalization kicked in.
